Green Transition at The David Collection

Grøn omstilling på Davids Samling

The David Collection is actively working to support the green transition by integrating sustainable principles into the museum’s operations and development. We aim to take responsibility for reducing our climate footprint – both in our day‑to‑day activities and in the long-term decisions that shape the museum’s future.

At The David Collection, we seek to strengthen our green initiatives and ensure that the museum – through its collections, buildings, and activities – becomes even more responsible in protecting the environment.

As part of this effort, we have joined ODM’s Charter for the Green Transition of Danish Museums through the Museums’ Green Academy, where cultural institutions collaborate to create more sustainable frameworks for the museum sector.

Although the David Collection is housed in listed buildings, which poses particular challenges for implementing green solutions, we consider it essential to find sustainable ways forward. The protected surroundings must not hinder progress – on the contrary, we wish to demonstrate that cultural heritage and the green transition can go hand in hand.

Our ambitions for a more sustainable museum

We aim to continue our strong collaboration with the Museums’ Green Academy and to meet our commitments as a signatory to the Charter for the Green Transition of Danish Museums. In accordance with the charter, our goal is to be CO₂‑neutral by 2050.

We are committed to continuously reducing the greenhouse gas emissions generated by the museum’s operations and activities, and we are working to establish binding targets for the coming years.

Since 2009, we have reduced our electricity consumption by approximately 50% through ongoing optimisation of our climate-control systems and the transition to LED lighting. We continue to focus on reducing our use of electricity, heating, water, and other resources.

We incorporate reuse and circularity into the production of our exhibitions and have, among other things, developed a reusable modular display case system used in both our temporary exhibitions and permanent collection.

We work to raise awareness of our green transition efforts internally across the organisation, and we share knowledge across professional groups and departments.

We prioritise making our initiatives visible to visitors and sharing our experiences with other museums and institutions.
