Fritware jug, with decoration cut through a black slip under a transparent, turquoise glaze
Iran; 2nd half of 12th century
H: 14.3, Diam: 14.5 cm
Inventory number 3/1975
The largely calligraphic decoration on this spherical jug is quite monumental. The black slip was dry before the round panels were cut around the Kufi letters and floral ornamentation.
Despite the layer of turquoise glaze, the decoration appears in low relief – the silhouette type. The same technique, but with completely different decorations, is found on the slightly earlier earthenware pottery of the Garrus type (1/1967).
