Eva Stæhr-Nielsen (1911–1976)
Vase, 1950-1968
Stoneware, Saxbo
H: 13 cm
Inventory number MK 65
Around 1950 and for some years to come, Saxbo Pottery produced a number of works with direct associations to nature. Among these is this small vase designed by Eva Stæhr-Nielsen in the early 1950s. It is part of a group of Saxbo vases where form and decoration fuse in a tulip-like piece.
The vase is glazed with the brown hare’s-fur glaze created by the manager of Saxbo, Nathalie Krebs (1895–1978), in the early 1930s. It was one of the first glazes she devised for her pottery, reflecting her emphasis on using glazes that had not been seen elsewhere before.1 A characteristic trait of the hare’s-fur glaze is its richly variegated play of colours, which added a decorative touch to smooth surfaces.
Eva Stæhr-Nielsen was associated with Saxbo until the it closed in 1968. Following that, she was employed at Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory (now Royal Copenhagen), where she became manager of Stentøjskælderen in 1970. In 1975, she left her managerial job and became a contracted artist.
The David Collection owns a total of ten works by Eva Stæhr-Nielsen, all of which were created during her time at Saxbo. In addition, the collection also have works by other potters who worked at Saxbo over time, including Axel Salto (MK 59), Gudrun Meedom-Bech and Leon Galleto.
